The act of breaking up with a partner by lying to make them feel better. The typical lie involves blaming the dumper's own self for the problem.

Soft dumping refers to breaking things off with someone you have been seeing only casually. The difference between dumping someone in the usual sense and soft dumping is that the two (or three) of you were never all too serious or exclusive in the first place. This is typically relevant for folks who are non-monogamous or in open-relationships.
"Stacy soft dumped me dude, we had only been hooking up for a month or two but it was really good and I thought I saw it going somewhere. Now Steve is the only person I'm sleeping with at the moment.
