Obviously this seems to be correlated with the Fairy mithology; indeed some historians believe the fairies ripped this off in hopes of infusing their own fad with some street cred.
Of course, humans ability to kill them whenever in earshot has made the pleopard extremely distrustful of our kind, alas, to find evidence not hoaxed of their species is very difficult.
