When a person's ego and general refusal to follow recommendations makes them late for an important event.

They were plagued by a case of the Fellows effect. Needless to say they were late for everything.

Fellow Kids Effect

The phenomenon where attempts by outsiders (often older generations, authority figures, or brands) to adopt the language, style, or trends of youth culture are perceived by the in-group as forced, inauthentic, and cringeworthy.

You see that new Geico commercial that used the word Skibidi? That was some Fellow Kids effect shit right there.
