The name refers to the act of dunking (basketball), yet in the case of a "dirty dunkin'", it really needs to be performed outside of the "rim," which makes the name ironic; otherwise it doesn't qualify as a dirty dunkin'. The name also refers to the first known dirty dunkin'*. While recommended being performed in a public area, it could be, theoretically, be done inside a private property.

*The first known dirty dunkin' took place inside a Dunkin' Donuts, in the small american city of Campton (NH).
