However, the term is considered outdated having originated from the 1980s during the height of these types of store's popularity when gay men had to be more discreet about their sexuality and lifestyle.

Adult bookstores also carry an array of adult novelties toys such as dildos & vibrators, x-rated magazines & movies, personal lubrication, poppers and over-the-counter boner pills.

Depending on the legality of the county or state, many adult bookstores also provide adult arcades where glory holes are prominently found.

"Let's meet at the adult bookstore around the corner and hook up."

"I'm low on lube, let's stop at the adult bookstore and stock up."
