Its true definition is meant to describe a tool. But can correlate to such slang as in the tool can go both ways, latches onto various size bolts/nuts and inserting or removing them from/in holes. A ratchet doesn't discriminate from big or small, lose or tight. Like i said, they come in all different shapes and sizes, and are readily available for consumers to purchase, use, keep or discard, loan to friends or family, and even sell.
