beat around the bush

To talk about something without mentioning it directly or avoid getting to the core of the subject--to try to bring up a subject in a roundabout way. Often motivated from a desire not to speak frankly about the subject, either because the subject is taboo, it's impolite to bring it up directly, or the conversation is perceived likely to be painful.

Nicking Around

Nicking Around is the act of when someone is being really nice and gives you the idea that that they want to be around you. Then out of nowhere ignores and avoids talking to you or being around you in anyway. Nicking around is a random occurance, but when it does occur causes people to feel "nicked off".
Me: I asked David if he wanted to hang out today.
Beth: oh yeah? what did he say?
Me: Well it was good at first, but then he started nicking around on me!
Beth: ugh! That's so annoying, did you feel "nicked off" after?
