My Bag

The term "my bag" is the 1930s original pronunciation of the more recent "my bad" mispronunciation from the 1980s. It means "my mistake, my fault, my apologies". The two pronunciations coexisted for about 15 years till roughly 1995. The Millennials never knew the original term.

"My bag" was a phrase used when playing a game of spades. In the game, you must for-tell how many "books" or hands you would take. It was called a "bag" if you went over that number. It was a courtesy to claim your mistake by saying "My Bag" if you were playing with a partner.

Spades came out of the Midwestern United States in the late 1930s. It was said to have been invented by college students who enjoyed both Whist and Bridge. They were looking for a fast-paced game that was competitive and strategic. The game slowly spread to other college campuses. It didn't take off until WWII brought so much of America's youth into the military. Because the game was portable, could be played by small groups, and could often be played in less than twenty minutes, its popularity mushroomed. You can still find the game online.

"My Bag," meaning "My Mistake," should not be confused with "Not My Bag." meaning "Not My Thing." or "What's Your Bag?" meaning "What's Your Problem?"

Chalk bag compliment

When a girl is trying to flirt with you but she doesn’t make it obvious so she sounds more like she’s just simply giving a random compliment.
Girl: “I really like your chalk bag.”
Guy: “Thanks…”
Girl, thinking about it later: Why didn’t he flirt back?
Guy, thinking about it later: That girl was nice for giving me a chalk bag compliment.

Moving Bags of Lettuce

A phrase used to describe something that:
A) should be incredibly simple, but is instead quite complicated
B) should be easy, but instead requires immense effort
C) seems like it should take only a short while to accomplish, but instead takes exponentially longer than expected

The phrase appears to have originated from a conversation between an engineer and his sister early in 2024. The story goes that in describing his day, he was explaining a conveyor belt that he was designing. Intending to use “like” as a filler word, he said, “It’s just, like, moving bags of lettuce! It shouldn’t be so hard!” His sister, thinking he was using some new expression she had never heard, asked him to explain what he meant by, “like moving bags of lettuce.” Thus the expression was born.
My work was terribly difficult today. I felt like I was moving bags of lettuce.

Changing that tire was like moving bags of lettuce. It took three hours longer than I thought it would have.
