From the world of commercial perfumery: When a particular fragrance, masculine or feminine, has been a huge success, its makers will often try to capitalize on its success by creating "spinoff" fragrances. These "spinoffs", called flankers, might be similar to the original olfactorily, but with a different spin or variation put on it. "Light" versions, "sport" versions, "veil" versions are common types of flanker.

Traditional SHALIMAR perfume seems heavy and musky to a whole new generation of Millennial women accustomed to fragrances which smell detergent, aquatic and ultra "clean". With this in mind, the company's house, GUERLAIN OF PARIS, has launched a new flanker: a much lighter version of the classic 1925 sexbomb, pruned of its muskier elements, called simply SHALIMAR LIGHT.

Flandering

To attempt a conversation while unintentionally thoroughly confusing your listener. Approving and negating a topic in the same sentence. To open up a conversation on one topic and randomly change to another. The flanderer may be sober or intoxicated. Rapid successions of the words, "yea, yea, yea, no, no, no"

"Yo dude did you borrow my pen?"

"Yea yea yea, no no no"

"huh?"

"I did, but then I didn't"

"Quit fucking flandering, did you borrow it or not?"

flanger

A guitar effect that does not work like a wah pedal. It does, however, work as a continually variable delay pedal. The delay on a flanger is too short to hear as an echo and the rate of delay expands and contracts to set intervals during a set amount of time according to how the operator programs it.

The effect is called "flange" because before the advent of flanger pedals, sound engineers and musicians would press the inside of the thumb (the "flange") onto the tape reel to slow it down and speed it up to achieve the desired effect.

Forget the flanger in anything by Simple Plan; just listen to Thru the Eyes of Ruby by the Smashing Pumpkins!
