unlike the variations of stink, stank is a much more putrid smell. It is used as a comical exaggeration instead of saying “stink”.

Lee told Mary that he heard her ex-boyfriend just got divorced and figures that her ex-boyfriend really wants Mary back, and that’s why he told a few friends and specifically said not to tell Mary; now Mary is stalking her ex on social media because she’s obsessed with getting him back. Lee is a pathetic stank stick, because he did it all just to see Mary get upset and cause trouble for herself and others.
