A cognitive and rhetorical bias common in online debates where one side does none of the intellectual work—no research, no argument construction, no evidence—yet demands that the other side produce endless proof, often demanding impossible or absurd levels of evidence (e.g., “prove that thought exists”). The lazy participant outsources all cognitive labor to the opponent, then uses any failure to meet arbitrary standards as proof that the opponent’s position is weak. It is the opposite of “do your own research”: it demands that others do all research for them.
Example: “He asked for sources, got them, asked for better sources, got them, then asked for a ‘meta‑analysis of all possible sources’—laziness bias, making the other person work while he did nothing.”

Get the Laziness Bias mug.A meta‑cognitive bias where one believes they have successfully eliminated their own biases, often leading to increased confidence in their judgments while remaining just as biased as before. The act of learning about cognitive biases creates an illusion of immunity: people assume that because they can name a bias, they are no longer subject to it. This bias is especially common among skeptics, rationalists, and self‑proclaimed critical thinkers who mistake awareness for transcendence. Debiasing bias makes people less open to feedback because they believe they have already done the work of cleaning their own mental house.
Example: “He spent an hour reading about confirmation bias, then declared himself ‘debiased’—and proceeded to dismiss all opposing evidence with renewed certainty. Debiasing bias: learning about bias as a shield against self‑reflection.”

A cognitive bias where harm caused by an individual or institution is automatically excused or minimized if the actor claims it was unintentional, while harm caused by others is treated as deliberate and malicious even when intent is unclear. The bias operates asymmetrically: one’s own side is presumed well‑meaning, opponents are presumed malevolent. Unintentionality bias is rampant in politics, corporate scandals, and interpersonal conflict, allowing systemic harm to be dismissed as “just a mistake” while punishing the same behavior in rivals.
Example: “When his platform leaked user data, he called it an honest oversight; when a competitor had a similar leak, he called it criminal negligence. Unintentionality bias: intent ascribed to favor the in‑group.”

Get the Unintentionality Bias mug.A systemic bias within academic institutions that privileges certain methods, frameworks, and topics while marginalizing others—often under the guise of “rigor” or “objectivity.” Academic bias can be disciplinary (e.g., quantitative over qualitative methods), ideological (e.g., naturalizing neoliberal assumptions in economics), or demographic (e.g., Western perspectives centered while indigenous knowledge is excluded). It is maintained through hiring practices, funding priorities, peer review gatekeeping, and the implicit training that shapes what counts as “serious” scholarship.
Example: “Her dissertation on indigenous water management was rejected for being ‘not rigorous’—yet similar studies on European irrigation passed without question. Academic bias: institutional gatekeeping disguised as epistemic neutrality.”
