Yoop Loop

1. A scenic route around Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which is also known as the "U.P." or "Yoop." Motorcyclists are especially fond of this semi-wilderness experience.

2. An alternative route from Wisconsin to lower Michigan. Instead of slogging through the heavy traffic of metro Chicago, adventurous drivers can take the "Yoop Loop" over the top of Lake Michigan and then across the Mackinac Bridge to lower Michigan. Longer, yes, but way more beautiful.

3. A generic term for any trip that takes the traveler through Michigan's Upper Peninsula en route to somewhere else -- one of the great undiscovered pleasures of the North Country.

"Don't drive through that traffic mess in Chicago. Let's take the Yoop Loop instead."

School Loop is a website which is increasingly popular among high schools. It is a double-edged sword, since it allows students to check their grades at any time, and view upcoming assignments in case they forgot. However, it also sends e-mail alerts containing grades and updates whenever a teacher changes something. It sends roughly three of these each day on average. As if the privacy of teens hasn't been trampled enough already, now we have a 24-7 school nany cam. Joy!

Dammit. My mom saw my grades on school loop, and grounded me for a month. She also yelled obscenities at me, trampling my self-esteem. My pride hurts.

Uninformed. Ignorant of the situation. Not receiving appropriate information. Think of "the loop" as being a communications channel, and therefore being out of the loop means no one is communicating with you to get you the information you need.

Manager: Why did you miss today's staff meeting?

Employee: I didn't know there was one scheduled. I was completely out of the loop.
