An idiomatic way of describing normal life as having undermined one's plans.

We were going to travel the world and have all sorts of adventures, but we had the mortgage to pay, my parents needed someone to look in on them, I lost my job, Cheryl got pregnant - you know, life happened - and all those grand plans were forgotten.
