Birmingham-Southern College

Birmingham-Southern College is the Top Ranked College or University in the state of Alabama.

The college is ranked in the Top 10 Colleges in the Southeast and is among the Top 150 Private Colleges in the Nation.

Its students traditionally come from families that fall in the upper-middle to upper class bracket, and they also maintain high GPAs.

Birmingham-Southern is fairly selective in its admission process, and students report that it's even harder to stay enrolled due to its rigorous courses and heavy workload.

Many of the professors at Birmingham-Southern have ranked higher in student approval and College Review Boards than those at Yale, Vanderbilt, Duke, and Tulane Universities, respectively.

The college spends more on indvidual student services than any other school in the South. Its student-teacher ratio is approx. 12:1

Graduates from BSC are highly sought after, especially in the Southeast. It has become known as a breeding ground for future lawyers, doctors, and politicians.

Tuition at BSC is among the highest in the South, with the total collective cost (including tuiton, meal plans, books, and room and board) averaging $40,000 a year. However, its massive endowment allows for numerous scholarships for students from low-income families.

Despite its high cost of attendance, enrollment at BSC is constantly growing. In past three years, student enrollment has reached a record high. It currently (as of Fall 2009) has an enrollment of approx. 1600.
Birmingham-Southern College has been ranked as the best college in the state of Alabama, and has been described by many as a mini-Vanderbilt of sorts. Birmingham residents often refer to it as a "Southern Ivy," due to both its reputation and high cost of attendance. Its students are among the best in America, and are consistently accepted to Ivy League Graduate Programs.

birmingham screwdriver

A hammer. Usually used on delicate devices when a real screwdriver would be better. Refers to the habit of a Birmingham inhabitant (i.e. simpleton to take a rather simplitic view of maintenance. Similar to percussive maintenance.

If it don't work - hit it.
If it still don't work, use a bigger hammer.

Birmingham

Usually regarded as Britain's second city, although jealous Mancunians have started a web based propaganda campaign to take this title for themselves.

In reality, they can have it - although the title should maybe go to Glasgow (historiacally) or to Leeds (by size). Birmingham should really be the first city.

It depends how you define a city - The actual City of London is tiny. So is the City of Westmister. The rest of London is an urban sprawl of various towns, cities and suburbia. 'Greater London' is very big - but does not have city status.

Birmingham is the biggest "City" in Britain by a very substantial margin
City Of Birmingham. Population: 970,892
City Of Leeds. Population: 715,404
City Of Glasgow. Population: 577,869
City Of Sheffield. Population: 513,234
City Of Bradford. Population: 467,665
City Of Edinborough. Population: 448,624
City Of Liverpool. Population: 439,477
City Of Manchester. Population: 392,819
City Of London. Population: 7,800

Remember, these are the cities, not the urban sprawls around them. Data is from the 2001 census.

Birmingham

aka Brom, Brummagem, etc
a historical English city of great import that often gets a bad rap.
Queen of the West Midlands, King of the Hill, and you can fly out of there, too.
I grew up in the Bull Ring in Birmingham, so people think I talk funny.
They named a town in Alabama after my city, so there is a Brom in the New World, too.

North West Birmingham

North West Birmingham has recently become a big thing due to millionz (rapper) from Birmingham.

The North West of the city is definitely the more "Gang Affected" side of town, areas such as Aston, Perry Barr, Handsworth, Handsworth Wood, Winson Green, are largely gang affiliated areas (Burger Bar & Johnson Crew) other areas such as Smethwick & West Bromwich border the North West Birmingham border, but come under the Sandwell Borough but are still locally classed as North West Birmingham due to short distance. Other Areas people may get confused with North West are Newtown, Lozells, Hockley & Ladywood due to short distance also but they are in fact classed as Innercity (Central) never the less all those areas mentioned a compact with each other.

Sandwell which is also not part of the city but a borough built up of individual towns, Smethwick, West Bromwich, Oldbury, Rowley Regis & Tipton, is considered the Black Country along with Walsall, Dudley & Wolverhampton. But due to postcode, area code & short distance from the city centre, Smethwick & West Bromwich are practically Birmingham & closer to the City Centre than the majority of area in Birmingham. Smethwick which lies 2 miles from the Centre of Birmingham on the North West Side, was to be a part of the city but left out by one single vote twice due to the crime in the area during the 60s & 90s.
