A subgenre of hardcore music originating mainly from the D.C. hardcore punk scene in the late 1980s. The word is an abreviation of 'emocore'. Hardcore was mainly about politics and anger. Fugazi were the first emo band and their first album , '13 Songs', talked more about their emotions leading to the creation of the word.
Emo is now a word used by people with very small vocabularies for anybody bohemian/alternative (i.e. those who do not wear trackies or listen to rap music)

You can't dress 'emo' and become 'emo' You can't be a music style. And if your trying, stop now.
Emotive hardcore was first experimented after the punk era, with bands deciding to focus on a more emotional side.
Emotive hardcore, shows emotion, but so does alot of rap and classical music.
People who 'cut' aren't neccessarily 'emo'.
Imagine this.
We like to relate to things. To books, to life, to music.
So If you have emotional feelings, bad past experiences, you relate to songs that are about that (Emotive Hardcore), Thats why emos are called depressed, because alot of people see meaning in the lyrics and can relate. So 'emo's' aren't the happiest bunch. But logically, 'emo's' don't exist.

Get the Emo mug.A label coined by the media to define a new soft core punk rock tendency and its followers. Even when false, it is nowadays used to define a new teenage generation with dense emotional interface. Very soon they found themselves antagonized and unaccepted by many groups and creeds. A curious phenomenon given the fact that they are mostly concerned with their own matters and pose no threat to anyone else.
Much like the hippies in the sixties, who also suffered heavy discrimination despites their peaceful and non-violent tendency, emos have borrowed only more notoriety from the criticism and developed into a modern era phenomenon.
