poke and sniff

A very old way of how the US government checks meat. They would use rods to poke the meat and sniff the rod to see if the meat had bacteria. If the meat smelled bad, then it would be "dirty" and wouldn't pass inspection. This was a pretty bad way to check, cause the inspectors wouldn't wash the rods. That spreads bacteria from the bad meat to the good meat faster than covid ever will. This method was used until around the 1990s.

History teacher: What method did inspectors of meat from the government do during the 1900s?
Student: A rod to poke and sniff the meat for bacteria.

Another name for one's nose or nasal organ. Also commonly referred to as a snout, nozzle, muzzle, beak, honker, bill, or schnoz. This slang term was first coined and used in Lawrenceville, NJ, in 2004.

"When that keg hit me in the face I thought I broke my sniff piece for sure."

Stiffen

To stiffen someone means to give someone a right good beating so they are stiff in the morning. If you stiffen someone they won't know what's hit them. Said to have originated in Glasgow, Scotland.

Example 1:
Jock: Here mate did you see stiffen Bobby last night?
Div: Oh aye, he will be stoatin about this morning!
Example 2:
Jock: Shut it or all stiffen you!
Davy: Awright the come ahead ya fud!
