J. D. Salinger

Probably the greatest writer in American history. 89 year old Salinger had many stories published in The New Yorker but has had only four books published; The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction. His last work published was Hapworth 16, 1924 in The New Yorker in 1965. His last interview was in 1980 and since then he has become sort of a recluse and lives a quite life in New Hampshire. Salinger almost always writes about young, very intelligent and cynical people and his work appeals greatly to a younger audience because of his theme of loss of innocence and adolescent alienation.

I think for the past 40 years J. D. Salinger has been working on a huge masterpiece that will be published when he dies and blow us all away.

Saving Spree

The exact opposite of a "shopping spree" whereby an individual is determined to live according to a carefully planned out budget that would minimize spending to increase on savings.

I'm on a temporary "saving spree"... no shopping, no outting, until I've saved up enough money for that euro trip!

daylight savings time bar hopping

on the last sunday in October, the clocks get rolled back, so on the saturday night before an extra hour can be gained before bars legally have to close. Often coincides with halloween weekend, and the added time makes it one of the greatest nights of the year to go bar hopping, the reverse happens in the spring, so just go to house parties, and at least then it's not around a huge party holiday

'We got proper fucked last night, cause we got to do the daylight savings time bar hopping, nothing beats the extra hour'

'yeah but you'll pay for it in the spring when it gets reversed'

'the spring? i'll fucking pay for it tommorrow'

Coined after Grantland writer Bill Simmons used it when reviewing the movie The Lone Survivor. Readers then made fun of him by using it in their email questions.

Sawing-it-off

Saw (verb) - also: to saw, sawed, sawing, sawing-it-off

A nascient term, "sawing-it-off", and its corollary versions, originated in the early-2000s in Canada. Primarily used by teenagers and 20-somethings as a verb, the word "saw" is used in reference to partying or engaging in behaviour related to partying, drinking, and other recreational activites with friends. Oftentimes, the term is used as a synonym for more common partying phrases such as: rage, jam, bender, party, etc. While principally employed as a verb, "to saw" and its various incarnations can be used as adverbs or, in rare cases, nouns. Some of the alternatives to the intransitive "to saw" include, but are not limited to, the following: saw, sawing, sawed, sawing-it-off, sawed-out, sawmill, sawdust, etc. For example, "sawdust" may be used to describe the intended (or unintended) consequences of a night of "sawing" (i.e. the mess, clutter, and general aftermath left in the wake of a devastatingly amazing party). While the term itself has many applications, its growing usage and popularity amongst Canadian youth will undoubteduly continue to manifest new variations and plays on the original "to saw."

Sawing-it-off: "I can't believe we grabbed 8 kegs. We are really going to saw-it-off tonight."

To saw (saw/sawing): "It's been a long week bro. You ready to saw tonight?"

Sawmill: "Did you SEE that house jam last night? What a sawmill."

Sawdust: "That pig roast was unreal, but have you seen your place? Sawdust...everywhere. It's going to take forever to clean up!"

Weedlight Saving Time

When you set your clock forward one hour at 3:20 so you can have an excuse to smoke the last of your pot and then an hour later you can tell someone else it's 4:20 and you have none "you'll hit them back next time". :

"Hey man you said you only had a blunt of that left but now you're telling me you got high all day long yesterday.. what the funk!?!?" -steve

"Hey man yesterday was Weedlight Saving Time.. get off a hobos back, ya heard." -other steve
