A store of various sizes - sort of an "every-day garage sale" - that people goto in search of a small loan in place of an item as collateral. Most/Some places will hold the item for up to 90 days before putting it out on the shelves - if, in the matter that the loaner does not come to get it, and whilst doing, the Pawn Broker submits the information to the police (as required by law) so that the police can check for stolen merchandise (in some states).
The approximate value that you can pawn an item is based on what the Pawn Broker - in the matter that you don't come back for it - can get for it if the need to resell it arises. It basically works out as, he'll sell it back for about 60% of what it would be new (condition warrenting), and will take it from your for roughly 33% of said 60%. Although, there are cases where the price he will take it from you will be much lower.

A Sacraficial Lamb used to take the blame for a mis-managed project that actually has a long history of problems created by people long since promoted and moved elsewhere before the project is inherited by the pawn and hits a catastrophic unrecoverable demise.
Upon realizing the eminent the demise of a project promote everyone tied to it's history out of the department before hiring the Corporate Pawn to take on the projects responsibilities. Leave no former connections to the prior project team before hiring the pawn. Leave the pawn completly in the dark as much as possible while they try to navigate their sinking ship. Tell the pawn that the ship is in great shape, good luck and you are counting on them. The pawn will tell you otherwise eventually. Prepare documentation to fire the pawn as soon as the pawn starts to realize they have no means of sustainability.

A show on the History channel depicting the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, Nevada. The characters are: Rick Harrison (bald dude, co-owner), his father "Old Man" (older guy with incoherent speech at times, co-owner), Rick's son Corey (heavyset younger guy), and Corey's friend "Chumlee" (notorious for being a mega moron, but is a fan favorite because of his screw-ups).
Even though it is a pawn shop, the show is renowned for how badly these guys rip people off for their stuff! The deals are just unbelievably bad. You'd get more at a yard sale or flea market.
