Upper West Side

The Manhattan neighborhood west of the upper (59th street) and lower (110th street) bounds of Central Park. Between the Upper East Side and Park Slope in character. Its 220,000 residents (although best understood by Avenue/subdivision of the neighborhood) are:
- White and often Jewish, some blacks and hispanics (most heavily on Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue north of 86th street), Asians over-represented but not hugely
- Upper-middle class, lawyers, doctors, bankers (though fewer of the ultra-elite top .01% than the Upper East Side) successful writers, artists, musicians who tend to be more established/less cutting-edge and in their 30s or older (and if younger, they're more often than not associated in some way with Columbia University)
- Fairly mixed, though the wealthiest tend to be on Central Park West (esp. the closer to 59th street) Riverside Drive & West End Avenue (most esp. in the 70s, but throughout)
- Family-oriented & responsible, lots of kids, not too many people in their 20s
- Internationally aware and oriented
- Often entitled, though many are aware of it. Cultured, well-educated, quick to make it known. Perhaps highest New Yorker and New York Times readership per capita anywhere. Standard-bearers of liberal establishment. Stodgier and less at the cultural forefront than they'd like to believe. Not arrogant, but pleased with themselves, can come off as obnoxious. Take privilege somewhat for granted. Overall good people.
Sheila is the prototype Upper West Side mom: She's a half-Jewish, half-WASP, Ivy-educated lawyer married to a doctor, she's got two kids in a stroller who are going to a good private school, orders from Fresh Direct but makes constant trips to Zabar's, North Face fleece and New Balance running shoes, goes to regular dinner parties and the kids' school functions, likes work and is successful but always balances it with family life

Upper West

Short for "Upper West Side", a neighborhood in New York City, generally starts anywhere from West 66th to 72nd (right above Columbus Circle/Lincoln Square) and goes up until West 125th Street (Harlem). Predominantly white, upper/middle class neighborhood between Central and Riverside Parks and has historically been the home to many artists, performers, writers and liberal thinkers.
We're heading to the Upper West tonight to chill by Columbia and then go drinking on Columbus Ave in the 80s. You going?

The West Virginia Panhandle Epidemic

This proven ideal is that people living in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia are two or more years behind in society, but live only one half mile from two adjoining states. If a certain line of clothing and/or jewelry is popular now in those two adjoining states, rest assured it will not catch on until 2011 in the WV panhandle. Additionally to that, all teenage boys seem to have red hair and the traditional bowl cut from the mid to late 1990's and wear black tennis shoes to all occassions. Women in this epidemic seem to have a fetish for Looney Tunes T's and/or other cartoons.
"Hey man, isn't this Aeropostale shirt sweet?"

reply: "yeah man, if it was 2001"

"why is he wearing black tennis shoes to the homecoming?"

reply: "because he's a card carrying member of the West Virginia Panhandle Epidemic"

West ham

Area of East London- more famous for it's classic football team, known as 'THe Hammers' and 'The Irons', as there was once the Thames Ironworks there. The badge shews a castle with crossed hammers across it. Also a popular tatoo!
Once unarguably had one of the finest hooligan crews in Great Britain, the Inter City Firm. Originally a skinhead/bootboy outfit, they are now mostly casual, and have dropped off a bit. Championed by punk Oi! bands such as The Business, Cock Sparrer and THe Cockney Rejects. Have had many fine players down the years, most notably Bobby Moore. Go visit the home ground at Upton Park (Bolyen Ground).

West Linn High School

The local high school for West Linn, Oregon.
While a lot of the students are particularly wealthy, very few of them actually brag about it, as everybody seems to exaggerate. The people who usually write these definitions are usually the rich snobby types who get arrested for doing extremely stupid things and then wondering why.
The teachers are actually very good, but some students (see above) dislike them simply because they openly oppose them.
There are some really cool people at this school, though, amid the crowds of students. Though there are quite a few people who do/have done drugs, they generally are cool people, once you get past that. This usually has to do with the fact that these people do have a lot of money, with parents who have full time jobs meaning they're never at home, so the kids get bored with having everything and being good. Thus, they go do drugs.
There are a good chunk of students that are about middle class, but since people only come on here to rant because they got picked on, you never hear about them. There are some snobby people in this group, but for the most part they're pretty cool, down-to-Earth people.
tl;dr, WLHS is actually a pretty good school to go to. People just complain constantly because they do bad things and can't figure out why they're in trouble.
Kid 1: West Linn High School seriously sucks, man. I kicked over a trash can and a teacher actually had the NERVE to reprimand me! (This is an unrealistic representation since the people who usually do these things probably can't even define 'reprimand')

Kid 2: Yeah, I know, right? It's like they actually expect us to be GOOD and stuff!

or

Kid 1: I got this awesome new laptop for Christmas, and I'm super excited about it!

Snob: Oh you rich people always go on about all your nice fancy stuff because you're all rich and stuff.

Kid 1: Actually, my family had to scrape together the money for this.

Snob: You're a jerk for even trying to talk back to me. Not worth MY time! *goes off to smoke something*

Going West

Used to describe the feeling when you're absolutely out of your face on some substance or other. Generally the point in the night where things stop making sense. This feeling can be applied all the time when at a music festival.
"Mate, my head's going west... Where are you? Opposite the moon you say? Oh sound, I'll try and find you."

Also can be used as "My head's gone west.. I need to go home - now.."
