Your first ex, in the event you've been divorced twice. This term avoids confusion, is succint, and has the added benefit of showing you have a sense of humor.
I'm on speaking terms with my ex, but if I never see my ex-squared for the rest of my life, it will be just fine.

Pre-ex refers to your ex boyfriend/girlfriend before the break up. Many people get confused when someone refers to their ex if they are talking about before or after the break up.
If a person says, "My ex burned my house down" you wouldn't know if the ex boyfriend/girlfriend burned the house down while they were still dating and that's why they broke up or if they broke up and then the ex boyfriend/girlfriend burned the house down.

When someone reminds you of your ex or you think someone could potentially become an ex and won't even give that someone a chance.
Friend: "You should ask him out."
Me: "Nah, he reminds me of my ex."
Friend: "So, he's ex-zoned?"
Me: "Yep."

As soon as Carla and James broke up, Jake finished with his Fed-exing and took Carla while she was weak. Jake is a dick.
