Jason is a son of Zeus so he has lightning powers, thus providing the "Lightning" part of Lightning McLean. Piper's last name is McLean, adding that to the ship name. Most people prefer the ship name Jasper for this couple, but Lighning McLean is sometimes thought to be a more fun alternative, as it sounds like Lightning McQueen, the main character in the Disney-Pixar movie Cars.
