An open source operating system that is for more stable than windows. The only time I use windows is to play a few games. I dual boot linix and windows on the same computer. And linux connects DSL about three times faster than windows. Linux plays my TV card without crashing. Linux does not let me change system settings without being logged in as root. While in windows, I accidentally changed the name of a system file and wasn't able to fix it for hours. Windows and Linux both have their pros and cons. Weigh them both and choose for yourself. Don't dis someone if they choose one over the other.
Linux is for those who choose not to use windows
Windows is for those who don't know they have a choice
Windows is for those who don't know they have a choice

A very stable operating system that was created as an experiment by Linus Benedict Torvalds. He created it because he wanted to learn the inner workings of an operating system. He posted the code on the Internet for others to modify and share, and it spread like wildfire. It grew and grew and is growing every day. Although it is not as simple to use as Windows or Mac OS, it does have rock solid stability and is not uncommon to hear of systems running for many years without reboots. Many people who hate it do it to act cool, or because they dont understand it. Those who love it, love it because they understand that it may take a little while to get something working. Not those other impatient little bastards who want everyday on the double. It just needs time to get more user friendly.

Windows is for loosers, MAC OS is for housewifes, real men use Linux. Linux, makes your balls 20% heavier.

Linux is NOT an OS (Operating System). Linux is the actual kernel from which the platformed distribution runs and obtains directions. The Linux kernel is an open source system which falls under the GNU General Public license. In essence, Linux is a compressed, open source platform of UNIX. The actual OS's (distributions or flavors) are gentoo, red hat, unbuntu, slackware (Although very similar to straight UNIX), mandrake, arch, debian, mandriva, etc.
The Linux kernel was designed and constructed by Linus Torvalds to provide a free, open source kernel for all computer lovers.

i.e. Microsoft XP is an OS. Microsoft also has a kernel which makes it run. Linux is the actual kernel for distributions like S.u.S.E. etc.
1. Hey, do you use Linux?
- What?
2. Hey, do you use Linux?
- I love that OS
You're stupid.
3. Hey, do you use Linux?
- Yes, why yes I do.
Righto, Chap. Well done.

Linux Is Not UniX
A UNIX clone written by Linus Torvalds so people can have a UNIX-like OS which has no AT&T code for which you need to pay royalties. Known sometimes as GNU/Linux. Morons complain about compiling their software when the reason is for the software to be cross-compatible.

Linux is in NO WAY an alternative to Windows. Windows is intended as a multimedia and gaming OS and Linux is designed for server machines. They are two VERY DIFFERENT operating systems.

The common name for any open-source Operating System running on the Unix Kernal.
Common linux distributions include Ubuntu, Redhat, SUSE and Fedora.
The advantages of Linux over Windows:
-faster boot/loading times.
-no need for anti-virus software
-free
-no bloatware, spyware or useless programs to slow your computer down.
The disadvantages of Linux over Windows:
-game makers and large software companies stick with Windows because of its market share.
-less users than windows (which is also advantageous in a way) means less people working on making it even better.
-often not user friendly (although Ubuntu is considered to be the most user-friendly version, and is very easy to get used to).

The term Linux by itself refers to the kernel, not the operating system. It is based off of UNIX. The popular mobile phone operating system Android runs off of the Linux kernel. Also, OS X is based of of UNIX.
Linux is by far the best operating system for advanced users, though it is mainly up to personal preference
