In 1960, the Hanover chapter formally dissociated itself from the national organization because it would not allow the local Dartmouth chapter to allow minorities. The fraternity remained unnamed for 2 years, until brothers studying abroad in London, England proposed the name to honor a pub, the Bones Gate, that they frequented while there.
