Hess' as well as Bethlehem Steel were major employers in the area. In the mid 1990's Allentowns mayor who is incorrectly renowned as the greatest mayor took title 8 funding. This funding gave money to cities that inplimented low income high density housing. Almost immediately after this the Allen and Dieruff High Schools fell to perinial jokes in test scores and sports. Prior to this parents from areas like parkland paid tuition to send there children to Allen and Dieruff. Since this title 8 funding the city of allentown is infested with chronic unemployment, and incredibly low income. Add to this many illegal immigrants who cant speak english, gangs, and Hess' and Bethlehme steel going belly up and the city has since become a sespool as well as the high schools with Allen having three students shot outside its school last week and a stabbing in school last year.
