The Memphis Sound

The Memphis Sound is the moniker given to the soul sound that came out of Memphis, TN and the region specifically during the late 1960's and 1970's. Taking its influence from the old negro spirituals arising out of the cotton fields and the river, along with a new, distinctive driving drum beat, this new music became easily identifiable as it permeated the airwaves and topped the charts. STAX and HI Records were the local independent labels credited with this new creation.

The Memphis Sound is characterized mainly by soul R&B music with its deep, groovin' bass lines, light guitar work, keys (ranging from wurlitzer to Hammond B-3), and powerful vocals. It was accentuated by the horn sound prevalent in such soul classics as Hold On I'm Comin', Knock On Wood, Proud Mary, and others.

More recently, The Memphis Sound name has been utilized for band names, company names, and more generally, simply to describe the glory days of Memphis Music. The Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corp, est. 2002, was crowned National Champion in 2007, but had moved to Texas and become defunct by 2010. The Memphis Sound band, created in 1996, lauds the best musicians, vocalists, and production in the region, performing ove 80 events annually. Memphis Sound Entertainment, est. circa 1993, is a full service Music and Entertainment Company located in Memphis, Tennessee. The company produces major concerts and private events throughout the United States.
The Memphis Sound: Soul Man, Hold On I'm Comin', I'll Take You There, Proud Mary, Knock On Wood, Walkin' The Dog, The Dark End of The Street, Green Onions, etc. From Al Green to Eddie Floyd, Aretha, Tina, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, The Soul Children, Rufus Thomas, and many more, their contributions live on today!

Drowned In Sound

Drowned in Sound is an Internet website dedicated to music of the more niche genres although really it just focuses on anything deemed to be more clever and interesting than the average.

The website is home to boards where people can DiScuss their favourite albums (the Music Board) or any shit, although preferably funny shit, that comes into their heads (the Social Board), although many people post on both there is a bit of jokey rivalry between the two boards.

The average user (or DiSer) is young and fairly intelligent, many are students, posts are generally well written and don't use text speak (due to an abundance of Grammar Nazis). Humour is central and mainly of a mock aggressive or self depreciative style.

You should probably be aware that JAGs, Trolls, LADS and Oasis fans will not be tolerated.
DiSer 1: I've just listened to the new Joanna Newsom album, it's great, I'm going to make a thread on the Music board about how she has progressed musically since 'The Milk Eyed Mender'.

DiSer 2: Hmmm, It's alright 'Ys' is better though, I think she's gone for too much of a commercial sound on the new record.

DiSer 1: Maybe, but she can't just remake the same album over and over again, and it's not her fault her voice has changed, she had a nodule operation.

DiSer 3: I don't like her, and there's no way I'm going to sit and listen to over two hours of indie folk, but I kind of fancy her so I'm going to go and make a thread on the Social Board about how she is FIT!

(N.B. This is an unlikely consersation as most users of Drowned in Sound don't actually talk to people in real life)

Surround sound

When 5 or more guys stand around a girl and fart in her face while she masturbates, or 5 girls queef while a man masturbates. This also applies to guy on guy and girl on girl action.
I was in the middle of a surround sound last night and when the last guy farted I came so hard.

X Of Sound

The application of semi-algebraic principals towards a sound pattern for electronic music. "X" being the time slot in the pattern where a sound sample could/should be used. If applied correctly, an equation of sound samples equates from the overall pattern itself, thus creating the most intense pattern of sound possible, for that point in a track. It's the natural sense of rhythm.
Many drum & bass/idm/breakbeat/breakcore musicians use the subconscious algorithms of X of Sound.

Communication Without Sound

Turn off your radio
Come paint your pictures in my mind
Don't talk the night away
You know I ain't the talking kind

I don't want long discussions, right into the night
I don't want words
We ain't got time to play around
I don't want words

Don't pass the time away
Explaining all the lives you lead
Speak only with your eyes (Just Visualise)
'Cause there is nothing more we need
I don't want long discussions, right into the night
I don't want words
We ain't got time to play around
I don't want words
