jaina (HIGH-nah), n. (pl. jainas): Spanish for 'girlfriend', used mainly by Chicanos throughout the Southwest, especially California. It is synonymous with the spanish term, 'ruca.' Possibly related to the Portuguese word, 'rainha' (pronounced HIGH-nyah), meaning 'queen'.
