the act of sending false (malicious) ARP packets to a targets Default gateway on a LAN so that the attacker can change the pairings of MAC addresses in the MAC to IP address Table thus allowing the attacker to inspect packets as their going through the network.

can be used to cause DoS attacks by intercepting and not forwarding the ARP packet
