In a couple, the person who does not participate in day-to-day or larger decisions and makes minimal contributions to the couples finances. In extreme cases, the petner is referred to, and communicated with by the other person in much the same manner as a dog.

Since Ben came back from Antarctica and moved in with Karen he;' turned into her petner. She controls everything: he has no money and hasn't even been looking for work.
