To save gasoline by putting a car into neutral (or depressing the clutch) when going down a hill.

The origin is uncertain, since Okies are not likely to encounter sizable hills on their native turf.

Compare with Jewish overdrive.

When something like a heater or stove is turned up as hot as it can possibly go in order to heat things up in a room as quickly as possible.

scotch overdrive

1. When you are driving, you go into Scotch Overdrive when you shift into Neutral. (Saving fuel, being a pinchpenny.)

2. Trying very hard to save money, to the point where you annoy others with your cost-saving antics.
