indie

The term: Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff.

History: grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just alternative(Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, No Doubt, etc.) and the other half that wasn't mainstream(by choice or not) became indie rock(Pavement, Sebadoh, Built To Spill, etc).

Some bands have signed to major labels but are still considered indie(Modest Mouse, etc.). Go figure.

Sound: In the begining indie sounded like alternative(because it was) but it grew more experimental and weird. In Britain indie has more of a typical sound like Radiohead, Muse, etc. rather than a definition based on 'the scene.'

The scene: if you really think all indie kids do is try to be cooler than other people then... well.. you're mostly right. The main point is, don't take the scene and the whole hipster attitude seriously. No one does. And if you do, well, then I'm cooler than you.

Indestructible

The fourth, plus very bad-ass album and song by Disturbed
"I'll have you know that that I've become indestructible. Determination that is incorruptible, from the other side a terror to behold, annihalation will be unavoidable. Every broken enemy will know that their opponent had to be invincible..."

(Insert game)? Ah hell nah another quirky earthbound inspired indie rpg

Are you kidding me? Have YOU even played the game at all? Sure it may contain earthbound aesthetics/inspos but don’t go around hating because of “oh wow another earthbound game”. Just go play it. There’s literally a millions of those out there.

indier-than-thou

An attitude of superiority, expressed through detailed knowledge of independent music and film, as well as the donning of ironic thrift store clothing and lengthy, eye-hiding bangs.

Can also refer to any item used to express the fact that one is indier than others.

Used in this manner by a disgruntled Starbucks employee in an email to the blog Gawker:
"Go hate on the schmucks at Cake Shop or Bowery Poetry Club or something. Their coffee's not that much better, their employees don't have health coverage, their bathrooms aren't any cleaner, and your chances of being snobbed off by some kid with an indier-than-thou haircut are exponentially greater."

indiepic

1. An adjective used to describe a scene which a person into indie music would love to photograph and post on facebook with a deep but meaningless title. This type of scene generally includes unusual lighting arrangements, long exposure, or unnecessarily altered colors, and often features the photographer, blurred people, old people, run-down urban buildings, and juxtaposed personal belongings or jewelry.

2. An adjective used to describe the type of person who would wish to photograph such a scene.
1. Did you see that old brick building with the tree in front? That's so indiepic!

2. Justin just posted another picture of a tree. He's hopelessly indiepic.

Fake Indie Lover

A fake indie lover enjoys and promotes as the end all and be all of indie: Mumford and sons, the 1975, Lana Del ray, arctic monkey, the use of emojis, especially 😭😂😩, genuinely enjoys popular page vines including Lele Pons, Brent Rivera, Brandon Bowen, Lance210, kianlawl etc, takes snapchat stories instead of enjoying the moment, wears a choker, uses the phrases: savage, doe, rt. has more followers than following on their friends only, loves tumblr, doesn't like facebook, flirts with the monkey emojis, claims to be indie, wants matching infinity tattoos with their bff, likes minions, sings along to train, gets genuinely shocked when they find out someone else listens to a semi unpopular artist, "I started that trend"
"People don't know what real music is these days. The weekend is what real music is🙊 I discovered them before anybody while I was wearing my choker and my flannel tied around my waist" -a fake indie lover

"My favourite classic song is drops of Jupiter by train" -also a fake indie lover

Indie Girl

Traditionally, someone who doesn't care what anybody else thinks, or at least pretends to.
If she sees something she likes in Urban Outfitters or Topshop, she'll get it. If she sees something she likes in Abercrombie, she'll get it. If she likes something in a thrift store, she'll get it, etc.
Likewise, her music taste should be what she likes, not limited by any sort of genre.
She will read, write or draw if those are the things she enjoys or is good at.
SHE WON'T ACTIVELY TRY TO BE DIFFERENT, SHE JUST IS! To be an indie girl, you have to be someone who is mature enough to know who you are and happy enough in yourself to stand out.

To be a fake indie girl, however, you need only 4 things. Tumblr, photoshop, a pretentious jumped-up attitude and a fringe.
Fake indie girls are the ones who google 'bands that nobody has heard of' to make themselves different.
Fake Indie- Check out my Tumblr with photoshopped pictures of beaches with writing! Or don't, but that's just because you're jealous of me and my cool indie-ness.

Indie Girl- No, I'm alright doing my own thing.
