The purest definition of asexual, is literally anti sexual. This means that they neither want or need sexual contact with another person to feel fulfilled.
However, some asexuals do want or even like sexual contact with their romantic partners. However, 95% of the time, it is solely for the benefit of their partners as many dislike sex or find little to no pleasure in the activity.

This is my own history.
me: I am asexual
person: But you've had sex before...
me: yes. But that doesn't mean that I wanted it.
person: you mean it was rape?
me: No. It was for their benefit. Plus I wanted to know what a sexual relationship was like. I quickly figured out that I do not like or want sex.
person: oh... you're weird.
me: its not weird, it's just unusual.
Person: were you abused ?
Me: sigh. Not before I worked out I was asexual.
person: you frigid then?
Me: are you stupid? No. I'm okay to have sex with my romantic partner if they really want it. For me, it does NOTHING.
person: then why do you have a romantic partner?
Me: because I am human and I like being able to have cuddles and kisses. I want a normal loving relationship, just without the sex.
Person: *now educated* oh... guess it makes things less of a headache with birth control and STDs then...
Me *slaps head*

Get the Asexual mug.As an asexual myself, I've seen many misconceptions about this term. Asexuality is not a "homogeneous category" . Although I don't speak for all asexuals and this isn't an exhaustive list, I'll hope to give more insights to this term since it's only been recently known to the scientific world.
According to Aven, an asexual is a person who "does not experience sexual attraction". That's it. That's all.
There are common misconceptions about asexuality:
1. "Asexuals don't like sex": Some don't want sex. But some enjoy having sex for the pure pleasure of having sex itself.
2. "Asexuality is just a phase/a choice": No, it's an orientation. People who identify as asexuals were born that way.
3. "You will never be in a relationship": There are many different types of asexuals in the world. No matter what, love is the main thing in a relationship for any sexual orientation.
4. "There's something wrong with you": There's nothing wrong with them. Asexuals are just as capable as anyone to lead and maintain a good, happy, and healthy life.

Person 1: You say you're an asexual but you love having sex? Asexuals don't feel any sexual attraction towards people, you're not an asexual!
Person 2: I'm asexual. I know because I am. Just because I'm not sexually attracted to people doesn't automatically mean I don't like sex.

Get the Asexual mug.
Get the Asexual mug.The Demi part means that you're not romantically attracted to people unless you form a strong bond with them. Therefore, when you see random people or whatever, you don't feel attracted to them unless you fall for their personality after you get to know them. So, you don't really get "crushes" like most people do.
The Panromantic part means that if/when you fall for someone, they could be any gender, meaning that you could be attracted to any gender or gender identity.
The Gray-Asexual part means several things, but for example: you feel sexual attraction infrequently, or a low intensity of it, to few people, or only in specific circumstances; that you feel sexual attraction but have no desire to act on it; that you have ambiguous or confusing feelings toward sexual attraction; or that you feel that sexual attraction is not a meaningful concept to you.
