Alpenglow is THE most divine natural phenomenon on the planet. Right before sunset or sunrise in the mountains, its that scarlet or golden light that shows up on the highest tips of peaks. It's an unreal, incredible vista that can't be replicated in any picture--you have to be in the alpine to really see what it means. It's why people hike without showering for four days, it's why getting up early for that car ride is worth it. Everyone needs to see proper Alpenglow before they die.

Those who wish to criticize the awesomeness of the sport cite a lack of physical conditioning necessary among racers. Perhaps these people are more familiar with recreational skiing. Being truly competitive on the slopes requires strength as well as endurance. As well as skill. Not to mention courage the courage required to throw oneself off of an ice ledge onto a 45 degree skating rink where harassed repeatedly by hard-plastic poles.
