Contextualism of the Formal Sciences

A philosophical framework holding that formal systems—logic, mathematics, computer science, information theory—are context-dependent in their meaning and application. What a formal system means depends on the context of its interpretation; what counts as a valid derivation depends on the context of its rules; what a formalism is useful for depends on the context of its application. Contextualism in the formal sciences opposes the idea that formal systems have meaning independent of their use. It insists that formalisms are tools whose significance emerges in context.

Example: "His contextualism of the formal sciences meant he rejected the idea that formal logic alone determines meaning. The same logical formula means different things in a programming language, a philosophical argument, and a legal document—context determines interpretation."

Contractionary Thermodynamics

The counterpart to expansionary thermodynamics, studying energy behavior in systems undergoing contraction—gravitational collapse, cooling and shrinking, implosions, or any process where volume decreases. In such systems, energy may appear to concentrate, temperatures rise, and entropy dynamics reverse locally. Black holes are a prime example: as matter collapses, gravitational energy transforms into heat, and the system's behavior defies the expectations of classical stationary thermodynamics. Contractionary thermodynamics explores how contraction affects work extraction, entropy production, and the arrow of time. It suggests that just as expansion breaks time-translation symmetry, contraction does too, but with opposite effects.

Contractive thermodynamics studies how energy, entropy, and order behave when boundaries shrink, when systems consolidate, when volumes decrease. It applies to star formation, to organisms shrinking under stress, to economic recessions, to cultural retrenchment. The key insight is that contraction concentrates energy, increases local order at the expense of external disorder, and can reverse classical entropy gradients. Contractive thermodynamics reveals that contraction is not simply expansion reversed but has its own distinct principles.

Contagion Bias

A bias derived from the Scientific Slippery Slope that treats non‑scientific ideas as infectious diseases that spread from mind to mind, with the first exposure acting as a “carrier” that infects the host and makes them susceptible to further infection. Contagion Bias often appears in discussions about media literacy or education, where any curriculum that includes non‑scientific content is framed as a “vector” spreading irrationality. It ignores that ideas are not diseases; people evaluate, filter, and selectively adopt beliefs based on context, community, and personal values.

Example: “She argued that even mentioning astrology in class would contaminate students’ minds—Contagion Bias treating a cultural concept as a pathogen that requires quarantine.”
