The origin of this term comes from city traffic signs ("Don't Block the Box") in order to alleviate rush hour traffic conditions where cars are stopped in the middle of an intersection. In these situations, blocking the box inevitably results in gridlock.

Where four cars have edged forward into busy traffic at a four way intersection in such a fashion that each car's front bumper is pointed at the next car right's side door and each car is of course blocked behind by the line of cars that inched forward with them.
