William and Mary Colledge in Virginia was styled as such when it was propose to King William and Queen Mary, and upon it's founding in 1699. Words change with time. The word for "fields" was different then as well, a field being style "ffield" in those times. So, "colledge" may not be as wrong as you think.

The project was endorsed by the clergy and Governor Francis Nicholson.
