"chap" beschreibt das Geräusch, welches beim zärtlichen Beissen einer Person entstehen würde. Die Intention ist es, seiner tiefen Zuneigung Ausdruck zu verleihen. Der Biss ist in dem Moment so gemeint, dass man durchaus etwas von der Person abbeißen würde - da dies in den seltensten Fällen wirklich erwünscht ist, wird durch die Nutzung von "chap" dieses Bissgeräuscht simuliert. In der Aussprache ist das "ch" ein kehliger Laut, der einem "ch" im Schwiizerdütsch durchaus ählich ist.
