Emo or Emotive is a music movement that began in the mid-1980s in Washington DC. The "emo" genre is more of an umbrella of music genres such as post hardcore, pop punk, indie and other styles. The emo genre is often fused with other styles creating genres such as emo pop, emoviolence, and melodic emocore. There is also the emo subgenre of scream which uses a style of "screaming" along with or as the main vocals.
Then of course there's the stereotypical emo, skinny jeans, wears black and is an emotional mess. Wrong, most emos are not like that. They are more or less better in touch with their emotions than that girl on the cheer team. Yes, emos do tend to dress a certain way but every emo is different and will express themselves differently. A British metalcore emo will wear Asking Alexandria tanktops, a post hardcore emo will wear a Sleeping With Sirens sweatshirt, a powerviolence emo will wear a Kuza shirt, everyone is different.

Get the Emomug. Emo is a very misused term, but very accurate when describing a group of teenagers, young adults, or adults who particularly favor a certain genre of music, a style, or anything else seen to a normal (used very loosely) person as dark and goth.

Get the Emomug. Emotive Hardcore is an offshoot from hardcore punk which formed in the late 80s and was played throughout the 90s. The term "emo" was coined to such bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace and other bands with a more melodic hardcore sound and expressive lyrics, although some later bands experimented with a softer indie alternative sound as well. You can also say it was a term to describe the "sound" of the DC area of the time. However, if you ask any of the members, they would highly disapprove of this term and most likely mock it.
Emo is not dying your hair black, piercing your lip, and it's certainly not cutting your wrist, that's just a trend. Emo is a music genre that started in the 90s and ended in the 90s.

#3. Well, unfortunaly, most morons think that being emo is about being extremely depressed and suicidal. Two words for you: NOT TRUE.
