(not offensive and non-sexual term):

a person who outwardly looks unfriendly and spiky, but once you get to know them better, they are actually shy and clumsy, but well-intentioned, always trying to help others out.

I know quite a few people who can be qualified as a banana. This definition of a banana comes from the facts that banana peels on the street can make you slip and hurt yourself (the person looks unfriendly and spiky) but the fruit itself is sweet and tasty (the person is shy, clumsy and trying to help others).
