Actually, people in Chicago refer to southern Illinois as DOWNSTATE, although they harber to same contempt as New Yorkers when they say Upstate.
Albany is in upstate New York. Springfield downstate from Chicago. Long Island is it's own fucking region so shut the fuck up brooklyn guy or else i'll fucking kill you.

Though when people refer to the term Long Island they probably only mean Nassau and Suffolk. Long Island especially Nassau has been greatly affected by its rowdy neighbor and Nassau is considered to be a mainly urban area with a few suburban towns sprinkled in. It consits of rich neighborhoods like Great Neck and Muttontown. And poor neighborhoods like Roosevelt, and Hempstead. The two citys of Long Island are Glen Cove and Long Beach which both have urban feels and is developed more than your average city and both have crime similar to those of big citys. Suffolk is somewhat urban, somewhat suburban and somewhat rural. About 100 miles east of the NYC border in suffolk is green acres and farm land. Though someparts of suffolk have been infested with urban sprawl and have been infested with gangs. Other towns are nice and quiet and particulary suburban like Smithtown and St. James. Sometowns are notorious like Wyandanch and Central Islip.

Most of the area was undeveloped or farmland until the 20th century. The end of WW II saw the development of many towns and mass migration from NYC. The vast majority of the citizens are middle class homeowners, though there are a few pockets of poverty here and there. There are also some exceptionally wealthy areas as some of the richest people in America own homes on Long Island. Most of these areas are on the North Shore, the fabled "Gold Coast" of legend and lore...that Fitzgerald romantacized in The Great Gatsby.
Most of the southern half of the island is flat, but as one moves north of the Long Island Expressway, the terrain becomes more undulating and hilly, though the highest spot is only 401 feet above sea level near Huntington Station.
The climate features cool, wet springs, very warm summers, mild autumns that often last well into November, and moderately cold winters. One can generally expect several snowstorms of greater than four inches from December through March and blizzard conditions do set in from time to time.

Long Island is a great place to live and for all you calling it ghetto, you dont fucking live here so shut the fuck up! An island east of NYC. When you hear Long Island, most people think about Nassau and Suffolk counties. Geographically, Long Island consists of 4 counties, Nassau, Suffolk, Kings and Queens.
Some people thing Long Island is ghetto, everyone is rich, but that's not true. It's an average suburban area, but, Long Island is special, besides some train stations smelling like piss. On Long Island (more specifically in Suffolk County) it takes about an hour to get to the city. (Manhattan for people who don't know what I mean by 'city'). Long Island has the best bagels, and amazing pizza.
