As a historical period, it is the period of time between about 1750 and 1815. The beginning of the classical period of music was marked by the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is characterized by very simple melody lines over a basic accompaniment, often utilizing motifs and sequencing with strict structure and form applied. The Grand Daddy of the classical era is considered to be Joseph Haydn, who has been given the nickname's "Father of the String Quartet", and "Father of the Symphony". Ludwig van Beethoven is also a prolific composer from this period of music, though Beethoven is given more credit for being the leader of the transition into the Romantic period, due to his odd ways of composition which became noticeable has he lost his hearing.
In general terms, classical is used to characterize music written before what is considered to be the contemporary genre of music, specifically music written before 1915. Suffice it to say that it takes an enormous amount of skill to be a classically trained musician. Listen to the Chopin Scherzo in B-flat Minor, or the Beethoven "Waldstein" Sonata. For more recent "classical", listen to Prokofiev, or even the wonderful Gyorgy Ligeti, who died recently in 2006. Classical music is very much alive and it is the reason we have the music we have today. And don't do what a stupid youtuber did once and tell someone opera sucks, therefore Justin Bieber has more skill than a Soprano soloist singing Mozart operas.

Anything Mozart, anything Haydn, and thousands of other composers, including Beethoven before he was about 30, is considered Classical Music.

The best genre of music EVER. It has many notable composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Prokofiev, Saint-Saens and more. It is the most complex type of music and most pieces are so beautiful and gentle. Some other are violent, whereas some others are a waltz.
Classical music is so underrated and stereotyped as boring. It's fucking not you dumb idiots. Take a look at fucking Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring. Or how bout' Liszt, huh?
Regardless, give a go and listen to it. Some recommendations are, for violent, Liszt, Rachmanioff, Brahms, Stravinsky, Saint-Saens, Shostakovich, Berlioz, Prokofiev, Ysaye, etc. For gentle you can choose Chopin, Franck, Debussy, Ravel (most works), Mozart, etc. Other composers that are in an in-between are Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Schubert, Schumann, Grieg, etc.

Modern pop culture does not hate it because its "boring", they hate the people who listen to it because it makes themselves feel "smart" and "deep".
Nobody gives a shit on your analysis of how this chord and tone sounds mean and how the conductor's frantic swaying reflects their "soul", "emotional state", and "conclusive dipshittery".
For those who really do love it, I'm not bashing your music, I hold no grudge against true appreciators of your art. However, I do harbor a hate for people who listen to it just to elevate their own egos, or were forced to listen to it by browbeating parents.
Either that, or modern methods of composing music makes the traditional way of making noises by means of carved wood, strings, and hollowed lead pipes appear dinosauric.

Upon posting this definition of "classical music", a ragtag lynch mob composed of angry college professors, browbeaten Asians with violins, and dweeby bookworms has assembled before my home half a second later to have me tarred and feathered.

Mostly good music, but is often overrated. Held in high esteem by the masses partly due to Eurocentrism and/or racism. That being said, Chopin is cool.
John only listens to classical music. He is unwilling to try listening to jazz, rap, pop, or eastern music. It sucks to be him.

Considered a type of music however unlike music it doesn't involve computer generated beats and even more shockingly, no lyrics.
Classical music has no emotion behind it. True lyricists like 50 cent speak from the heart. Classical doesn't have any lyrics so you don't know what they were thinking when they wrote that filth.
The majority of listeners are old people so you know it sucks, old people are too old to know and appreciate real music.
Most Classical msuic was made before 1995 which means it is old. Classical losers should stop living in the past and get with the times. It's 2005 at the time of typing!
Everybody knows that Mozart only got famous when he started beefing with the Beethoven man. During their sets, they would get semi-naked girls to dance on stage and perform sexually suggestive acts upone each other.
Anyone can make classical music.
1: Think of some random notes (Not even beats!)
2: Repeat step 1 six times
3: Invite 25 of ya gang around
4: Give them a violin or trombone or something else (NOT a turntable to be seen!)
5: Give each person a different sheet with random notes
6: Record the result
7: Get some director who is old to play it during their movie.
8 Mile is the best movie ever made and that ended with 'Lose Yourself'. No Classical in that. Only REAL music.
The reason classical is only played during movies nowadays is because:
1: If they played rap, people would focus more on the wicked beats than the plot.
2: All directors are older than 30 because they lived when dinosaurs ate people but unfortunely they lived.
3: Rap artists like 50 cent have too much dignity to let their art be given to shitty films like 'Civtizen Cane'
Classical only used to be popular because it was 'cool' at the time and true music like rap wasn't invented yet.
Classical is boring. When is the last time you saw classical music on MTV or at no.1 in the charts? I rest my case.

Music: 50 cent, Chingy, Nelly, Ludacris, Bone Crusher, Ja Rule, The Game (Not so much now, since 50 cent is the best and 50 cent hates The Game, that means he sucks, even the old stuff is now crap)
