Get the romala mug.Rockland County, with 176 square miles, is the smallest county in NYS but has, by far, the most to offer. Originally home to the Lenape Native Americans, Rockland is rich in history and is home to much more. Over 30% of the county is reserved Park Lands; Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain, Hi Tor, Hook Mountain, Rockland Lake and the widest point of the Hudson River, just to name a few. Well over 300,000 people live and flourish in Rockland due to its vicinity to NYC as well as its thriving communities.
Each of the five towns do their part to conserve the environment and protect local waterways. Rockland school systems are known as some of the best in the country and it is home to over five great colleges. Rockland runs its own line of bus transportation within and outside the county. It is also home to a number of train stations on NJ Transit and Metro-North Railroad as well as a ferry station along the Hudson. It is still home to a number of small family farms and holds dozens of weekly farmers markets. Rockland has its own Baseball Stadium and is home to the Palisades Mall, the eighth largest mall in the USA. Needless to say, Rockland has something for everyone.
Throughout history Rockland has been known as a hub for folks trying to escape the hustle of city life and a stopping point for travelers going elsewhere in New York and beyond. Everyone that lives in or visits Rockland finds a relaxing and inviting environment full of nature and history.

Get the rogal mug.The reason why Westchester and Long Island are downstate and Rockland is upstate has nothing to do with urbanization or location, but rather historical connection to New York City. The Bronx used to be part of Westchester County until the late 19th century and much of Westchester's nomenclature still exists in the Bronx today; the Eastchester neighborhood used to be part of the present-day Town of Eastchester; there is an Eastchester Bay and Westchester Creek in the Bronx, as well as an Eastchester Road, White Plains Road, and Westchester Square. There is a Town of Pelham in Westchester as well as Pelham Bay Park, Pelham Bay, and Pelham Parkway in the Bronx. Also, there is a Bronx River and Bronx River Parkway running through the Bronx and Lower Westchester. However, by this method Upper Westchester might qualify as upstate because it really is not involved in the Bronx/Lower Westchester history, and has some upstate names (e.g. "-on Hudson","-kill" as in Peekskill).
Nassau County used to be part of Queens and that is apparent based on similar names on both sides of the city line. Little Neck is in Queens adjacent to Great Neck in Nassau County. There's an East Rockaway in Nassau and Far Rockaway in Queens. Also, some towns in Nassau on the Queens border have the same name as the QUeens neighborhoods on the other side, like Floral Park and Bellerose. Furthermore, many zip codes straddle the Queens-Nassau border.
