Fuck 

A word used far too often by today's youth. The word is more or less used to eccentuate one's point. For example, as opposed to saying "Holy shit", one might say "holy FUCKING shit".

However the word was not created by angst-filled teenages, but originates from old english times. A couple would need permission from the King or Duke of their region in order to have sex (as it would produce possibly unwanted offspring). So, when they had permission, they would hang a sign on their door saying F.U.C.K., meaning Fornication Under Consent from the King.

I just kind of figured urban dictionary could use more dictionary and less urban.

Guy 1: I plan to fuck my wife tonight.

Guy 2: I recommend getting consent from the King for that fornication.

Guy 1: Oh damn, good call man.

OK, everybody seems to have their definitions of this nasty word. Here's one you all missed. It's the name of an indie band from the San Francisco Bay Area that got together around 1993 or so. They have put out several albums over the years. The music is pretty much alright, there are some good songs there, and their albums are critically acclaimed but because of the band name radio won't play their music, most record stores won't stock their albums, and most clubs won't book them. If it weren't for the Internet they probably wouldn't be going anywhere. Go to Wikipedia, type in the name and go to the proper entry. At the bottom of that page is a link to the band's website.

Fuck is a band that is in a situation where because of their name their prospects for success are limited. The success they have is largely due to word-of-mouth and of course, the Net.

word has probable cognates in other Germanic languages, such as German ficken (to fuck); Dutch fokken (to breed, to strike, to beget); dialectal Norwegian fukka (to copulate), and dialectal Swedish fokka (to strike, to copulate) and fock (penis). This points to a possible etymology where Common Germanic fuk– comes from an Indo-European root meaning "to strike", cognate with non-Germanic words such as Latin pugnus "fist". By reverse application of Grimm's law, this hypothetical root has the form *pug–. In early Proto-Germanic the word was likely used at first as a slang or euphemistic replacement for an older word for intercourse, and then became the usual word for intercourse.
Yet another possible etymology is from the Old High German word pfluog, meaning "to plow, as in a field".

1. English is a West-Germanic language with latin influences. "Fuck", as many English words, therefore has has a Germanic word root. The German verb "ficken" points to the actual sexual meaning of "to fuck".
2. Interestingly the word made its way back from English to German and changed the use of the word there. Originally, the word was restricted to its sexual meaning. Because of the strong English influence on the German language in recent history, it can nowadays also be used as a swear word.
