Second String Friend

Noun: a friend who is usually only called upon by a friend when a more primary/prominent friend is unavailable.

Taken from the term “second string” in an athletic competition situation. In football, if the star quarterback gets injured during a play, the second string is called off the bench to replace him/her. A “Second String Friend” is essentially benched until needed, if ever.

I got a call from X the other night. She had an extra ticket to a concert she bought for a friend, but they couldn’t make it so she called me to ask if I wanted to go because I am her Second String Friend.

favorite friend

Someone who is so special to you that they are differentiated from all of your other friends. A Favorite Friend is similar to A "Best Friend" except you can only have one. There is a special unexplainable bond created between Favorite Friends, simply because you are each other's favorite humans. You know this person will always be there for you and has a significant role in your life.

Everyone has best friends, but it's very rare that someone will find their favorite friend.

Friend Custody

When a couple breaks up, one person gets to keep the mutual friends while the other must find new ones because being around each other would be too awkward. The person who keeps the friends is said to be granted Friend Custody.

Bob: Why don't you come out with us tonight?

Phil: Because when Jane and I broke up, she got Friend Custody.

Friend of Gilgamesh

A term expressing a platonic relationship between adult males. The original use refers to the mythical king Gilgamesh, and his non-sexual friendship with the character Enkidu.

Montgomedy Sweelard is off traveling with Radrigo on some grand, manly adventure. Joe is a true Friend of Gilgamesh, and thus undoubtedly heterosexual.

Hug Friend

A hug friend (sometimes referred to as a hug buddy) is similar to a fuck buddy. However, unlike a fuck buddy, the hug friend is only for hugging. You can call him or her any time of the day (similar to a booty call) to request a hug when you are lonely, depressed, or just want a damn hug.

Hug friends may hug while scantily clad or even naked, so long as their contact is strictly of a hug-like nature. Any additional touching of a sexual nature is considered a breach in the hug friend code so that the relationship may no longer be classified as a hug friendship.

"Yesterday I had a really shitty day, so I called up my hug friend, Mike, to request a hug. He came over and gave me a big cuddly bear-hug. Afterwards, I felt so much better."

"Room mate 1: So you went over to Amy's pretty late last night.. Did you guys do it?

Room mate 2: No, we're just hug buddies. She couldn't sleep because she needed a hug, so I went over to give her one."

cross-friend

The act of getting two of your Facebook friends from unrelated social circles to "friend" one another based on compatibility and/or complimentary facets of their personalities for their mutual benefit/support. Typically accomplished through friend suggestions to both friends for the other, or both friends interacting with your Facebook page and friending one another. Derived from the term, cross-pollinate.

My best friend from college and one of my co-workers would really hit it off. I should cross-friend them.
