Toxic Midwesterninity

The general aversion of many people from the Midwestern US towards spending time, effort, and especially money on things which could materially improve one's life, which often causes folks to just accept a clearly sub-optimal situation as "fine".

Mr. C, your 60 year old wooden step ladder is way too old, rickety and wobbly to be trusted at this point, especially as you're getting on in years. Perhaps the purchase of a new step ladder is obviously warranted, but Toxic Midwesterninity is keeping you from buying a new one because you already have a "perfectly good" step ladder but really it's clearly dangerous at this point.

Toxic Waste

Toxic Waste is a type of sour sweet that comes in what looks like a small yellow plastic barrel and costs £1. Inside the container, there are many individually wrapped sweets that come in the following flavours - BLack CHerry, Blue Raspberry, Lemon, Apple and Watermelon. Unfortunately, you only ever seem to get one rasperry and one melon per pack. They irritate your mouth if you eat too many in a short space of time, but they are rather addictive.

Oh my GOD ! I just ate 6 toxic waste in a row !! They are sooo good ! But...now I feel as though the top of my mouth has been skinned....I need some bonjela......
