The origin comes from Pearl Jam leaving the absolutely awesome track "Yellow Ledbetter" off of their 1991 debut album 'Ten', instead making it the B-side to "Jeremy", although "Yellow Ledbetter" has since become one of their most well-known songs.

Person A: Man, I just heard "Girl Afraid" by The Smiths for the first time! I can't believe it was a B-side!
Person B: Yeah, man, they totally ledbettered it.
