the scuttlebutt: rumor/gossip. It's actually a nautical term for a cask used to serve water for immediate consumption. Sailors would gossip around the scuttlebutt while congregating for a drink of water.

Sailors always congregate around the scuttlebutt to find out the latest gossip on the ship!

A dirty man who talks a lot of rubbish (scutter).

A habitual liar, who often tells lies to impress people in the surrounds of a public house, whilst horrifically drunk.
A tramp who goes into pubs (usually Irish ones) with just enough money for a drink (usually cider). Buys drink then proceeds to annoy the locals with his drunken, abusive behaviour, bad odour and incontinence problem.
