A town in upstate New York that surrounding towns (Utica, New Hartford, Whitesboro, etc.) think is a hick town. In retaliation, we have parties where there is too much drinking to prove we're just as cool as you city folk.

the sum of the capital account balance and the current account balance; put another way, the net change in financial reserves of a country, whether in the form of income (current account) or foreign investments (capital account)


For example, in all years since 1980, the USA has run a large-to-huge current account deficit, but in most years it has run a capital account surplus that is almost as big as the current account deficit. As a result, the USA has run a medium-to-large balance of payments deficit over this period.

A commonly-overlooked byproduct of BoP is that it determines whether or not a currency can be used as an international reserve currency. Despite repeated efforts by the governments of the EU and Japan to get their currencies established as such, they have failed to dent the US dollar's global primacy as the money for international transactions. This is because EU member states and Japan (as well as other major economies) run very large surpluses in their BoP. Japan, in particular, imports extremely little, and retains huge reserves rather than invest all of its net export earnings overseas. As a consequence, overseas holdings of euros or yen are much to small to serve as an alternative to the US dollar.

Since the oil embargo of the 1970's, the US has run a balance of payments deficit because its trade deficit was enormous; prior to the embargo, the US BoP deficit was large because the US exported such an enormous amount of finance capital. As a consequence, the balance of payments deficit has persisted since the end of the Korean War (1953).

Holland Patent

Small ass town in Upstate New York neighboring Marcy, Stittville, and Barnaveld where shit goes down. Not many people live there, but there's enough to have it's own school district. There's like two main streets with houses on them, and that consists of the town's main population. In the summer, real niggas chill in the tiny ass park by the fire department and sometimes they walk up to Miller jump off the bridge into the scummy ass water below. In the winter, they snowmobile, and well that's about it considering the fact it's well, it's in the middle of scenic nowhere. All in all, the people from the area are pretty nice and chill people.

Guy 1: Hey, you going to Holland Patent?
Guy 2: No? What's to do there? It's in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere.
Guy 1: Yeah, but the niggas there are pretty chill.
Guy 2: I guess. Let's turn up.

Psychology term describing an individual, usually a child or teen, in a dysfunctional family who:

1) Gets scapegoated and blamed for a family's problems
2) Has emotional problems that are not a mental illness, but a normal response to the stress of dealing with an unhealthy family in denial
3) Blows the whistle on a dysfunctional family's problems

Phrase originated because family therapists recognized that the child "identified" as the patient is not necessarily the one who is sick.

1) John is dropping out of school and doing drugs and his parents want him institutionalized, but it turns out his mother is an abusive alcoholic and his father is chronically absent. John is the identified patient.

2) Becky is extremely depressed and fearful. She accuses her father, correctly, of molestation, but the parents deny it and accuse Becky of being sick for reasons that have nothing to do with them. Becky is the identified patient.

The Patient

The character that the My Chemical Romance album The Black Parade is centered around. He is battling a disease and when he dies, death comes to him in the form of a parade of people in black marching band outfits. This concept is based off of Gerard Way's belief that death comes to you in the form of your fondest memory.
