The vehicle in question may have up to 200,000 miles on the clock and have various problems with the exhaust, seatbelts, badly tinted windows. Custom modifications are popular, involving any materials, including cardboard, wooden spoilers, body kits from completely different makes and models of car.
Many chaviots can be seen in Max Power magazine or on the Top Gear website (yes, really), under the section entitled 'Carbage'.
