Tom complained of heart burn behind his sternum, mostly this occurred after he ate and went away in an hour or so. The pain was accompanied by belching and was worse if he laid down on his back or tried to do heavy work right after he ate. His doctor recommended that he avoid smoking, coffee, alcohol and some specific foods including chocolates, whole milk and OJ as well as fatty food. He was told to avoid anticholinergic agents and was treated with a cholinergic agonist (bethanechol) as well as a histamine antagonist (cimetidine).
