A tomgirl is similar to a Tomboy in that she likes to play sports - and can keep up with the best of them. However, while a tomboy likes to wear baggy clothes and not embrace her sexuality, the tomgirl cleans up nicely and puts pride into her personal appearance.

Get the tomgirl mug.By name alone, this term was originally used to refer to a GIRL who acted like a boy in many ways (masculine), much the same way that a Nancyboy was a BOY who acted like a girl in many ways (feminine). The name TomBoy when used to refer to a female makes zero sense. NancyBoy (girl-boy) uses a girl's name to modify the boy's behavior. TomGirl (boy-girl)functions exactly the same way. TomBoy is, in essence, Boy-Boy.

Get the tomgirl mug.The current equivalent of a “tomboy,” (which is a more outdated way to refer to a tough girl.)
Tomboy is a term that was most used and liked by trans guys and some nonbinary people, because the label “boy” in tomboy felt very affirming, and might still be used by closeted trans people today.
However, those who actually consider themselves girls today, may find the label “tomboy” to be insinuating that they’re toughness is a boy trait, which detracts from the fact that women can be strong. So maybe prefer to switch to the term tomgirl.
